The Birth Photos Your Phone Can’t Take

You probably already have your phone ready.

It’s probably going to be in the room when your baby is born.

Someone will take a picture.

Maybe they’ll take dozens.

And I’m all for it.

Take the phone pictures.

Grab the blurry ones,too.

Keep the ones where someone accidentally has their finger over the camera.

And don’t forget the photo of your baby’s first little hospital hat.

Take all of them.

But there are some birth photographs your phone simply can’t take.

And those are often the photographs that become the most meaningful.

(this is the ONLY picture I have of our last baby in the hospital)

The Moment You Aren’t Looking at Your Baby

When your baby is born, your eyes naturally go to them.

Of course they do.

But while you’re looking at your baby, there are other things happening around you.

Your partner may be crying.

Meanwhile, nurse may be smiling.

Someone might be reaching for a blanket.

As your care team may be moving around the room.

Your photographer can step back and see the entire scene.

You can’t.

You’re in it.

Your Partner’s Face

This is one of my favorite parts of birth photography.

Mom is usually the center of attention during labor.

But partners experience these births too.

The nervousness.

The anticipation.

The relief.

The overwhelming realization that they’re holding their baby.

Your partner may be looking at you with a kind of love you’ve never seen before.

You may not see that expression.

But your photographer can.

The Person Holding Your Hand

When you’re in labor, you may not even notice everything your support people are doing.

Someone might rub your back.

Hold your hand.

Wipe your forehead.

Bring you water.

Tell you that you’re doing an amazing job.

Years later, those photographs can remind you exactly who was there when you needed them.

The Room Before Your Baby Arrives

The hospital room may not seem important now.

You may even think it’s boring.

But years from now, those details can transport you right back.

The monitors.

A hospital bed.

That tiny bassinet waiting for your baby.

Your hospital bracelet, the birth ball, the blanket.

Even the clock on the wall and the flowers someone brought.

Your partner’s shoes kicked off in the corner.

Those ordinary details become part of an extraordinary day.

Your Care Team

Your nurse.

The doctor.

Your midwife or doula.

The people who helped you through the hours leading up to your baby’s arrival become part of the story too.

A phone might capture a quick snapshot.

A birth photographer can intentionally document the relationship and interaction between you and the people caring for you.

The Things Happening Behind You

This is one of the biggest differences.

Your phone sees whatever someone points it at.

A birth photographer is constantly watching.

I’m looking for the moment happening behind you.

The interaction across the room.

The person quietly crying.

Your partner’s hand resting on your shoulder.

Your baby’s first movements.

The little things that happen while everyone else is focused somewhere else.

The First Time You See Your Baby

Someone can take a picture of your baby.

Someone can take a picture of you holding your baby.

But there is something different about photographing the exact moment your eyes meet.

That reaction cannot be recreated.

It’s not posed.

It’s not rehearsed.

It’s yours.

The First Time Your Partner Holds the Baby

This is another moment that happens quickly.

One second you’re waiting.

The next, your baby is here.

And suddenly your partner is holding this tiny person they’ve been waiting months to meet.

The expression on their face is part of your baby’s birth story too.

The First Family Photo

Not the perfectly posed newborn photograph.

The first one.

The one where you’re exhausted.

The one where someone is still wearing hospital clothes.

The one where your hair may be a mess.

The one where you’re all looking at this brand-new person wondering how they are already yours.

Those are the photographs I love.

Because they’re real.

Your Own Birth Story

A phone can take photographs.

But a birth photographer is watching for a story.

I’m thinking about what happened before that photograph.

What happened after.

Who was there.

What was changing.

What mattered to you.

I’m not just trying to create one beautiful image.

I’m trying to create a collection of images that lets you remember the entire experience.

You Should Still Take the Phone Pictures

I don’t want you to put your phone away completely.

Your family should take pictures.

Your partner should take pictures.

Your nurse may take a picture.

Your mom might capture something hilarious.

Those photographs are wonderful.

But let them be what they are.

Snapshots.

Your birth photographer can take care of the bigger story.

That way, you don’t have to spend your baby’s birth worrying about documenting everything yourself.

You Only Get One First Birth Story

Your baby will change quickly.

The tiny fingers won’t stay tiny.

The hospital bracelet will come off.

The first hat will get packed away.

The room will be cleaned.

You’ll go home.

Life will start moving forward.

But your photographs can bring you back.

Back to the room.

Back to the people.

Back to the emotions.

Back to the moment your baby arrived.

That’s why I believe birth photography is about so much more than taking pictures.

It’s about remembering.

If you’re expecting in the DFW area and want your birth documented as it actually unfolds, Poppy+Blue Photography would love to tell your story.

Because your job is to be present.

I’ll worry about the photographs.
